When the Hummingbirds begin to migrate through, they are tired, stressed, hungry and in "unfamiliar territory." The lush gardens outside the greenhouses on the campus of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale are "magnets" for tired migrants. These hummingbirds were just such birds, and were so intent on nectaring and resting that they tolerated my presence not eight feet away. At times they flew within the 6 foot minimum focusing distance of my 400mm lens! I was treated to her presence for almost twenty minutes, when, rested and refreshed, she flew away to resume her journey.
