Campus Deer

In the middle of the campus of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale (SIU-C) where I teach is a mature growth woods, in which numerous deer live. Earlier this spring (2005), when the fawns were newborn, numerous incidents of "deer rage" attacks on students occurred, mostly when the does felt the fawns were threatened. In August and September, I have taken to arriving on campus early in the morning, following one particular family grouping of eight deer, patterning their movements, from the communal bedding site to feeding. Much of the social behavior described by L. L. Rue in his landmark text: THE DEER OF NORTH AMERICA hsve been observed. Low light situations have necessitated the use of higher ISO settings than I would otherwise have chosen, also requisite is the use of a monopod to steady the D70 + 100-300 lens used for these images.
