Tulip Viaduct

In making the trek from Evansville to Indianapolis we were able to make a visit to the Tulip Viaduct located between the villages of Tulip and Solsberry. It was a dreary, rainy day, but Ye Olde Photographer did what he could.

This structure was completed in 1906 by the Indiana Southern Railroad which shortly after became part of the Illinois Central RR. When built it was the largest structure of this type in the world. It is still the largest in the US. The bridge is 2295 feet long, 157 feet high, and used more than 2800 tons of steel in its construction. In 1986 it became part of the regional Indiana Railroad Company and is still in use.

We did not see any trains during our brief visit, but there are numerous YouTube videos featuring the bridge: A basic train transit viewed from the observation deck, some fascinating perspectives from a drone, and some really unnerving views from a locomotive! (And many, many more should appear available as those play!)

This stop was part of our Eclipse Ramble 2017.
