Batcheller Mansion

The Batcheller Mansion Inn was once the home of George Sherman Batcheller. Mr. Batcheller was a successful lawyer who served a number of government posts overseas in places as far away as Egypt and Portugal. This incredible place was built in 1873 for just he and his wife and one daughter. (Well, they liked to entertain and have guests and stuff!) The place was empty and nearly was condemned in the 1980s, but thankfully someone with some vision acquired it and restored it to its former glory. The rooms are amazing, furnished with lots of antiques, breakfasts feature many choices, just about done to order. The hosts were knowledgeable and ready with suggestions for restaurants and places to see. In short, it was delightful!

The property is just across the street from Congress Park which is the center of the historic part of town. A walk of three or four blocks took us to Broadway where there are dozens of restaurants and cafes, as well as shops and galleries. One could hardly ask for more. We were there after the summer, which includes horse racing, the Philadelphia Orchestra and the NY City Ballet in residence, etc., thus it was sort of off season. There were still plenty of people out and about and lots of activity, but no crowd scenes.

This gallery is part of the 2014 tour!
