On the Saturday afternoon after Thanksgiving Day, and after our midday trek to Dark Hollow Falls, we rested with some iced tea at the Wayside. That is a visitor center and snack place at Big Meadows (Mile 51). Following a bit of rest, we took a leasurely stroll along a relatively level fire road trail across from Big Meadows. At 3:00 PM, whitetailed deer were browsing in one area and barely trying to avoid people, Ye Olde Photographer was able to approach within ten or fifteen yards.
