Saucon Rail Trail

The Saucon Rail Trail is in Lehigh and Northampton Counties, south of Bethlehem. It travels through the Saucon Creek valley past the Saucon Creek Country Club golf course, several municipal parks and some beautiful country homes.

The trail is planned to go from Coopersburg to Bethlehem, but as of 2012, only the portion from Upper Saucon Park, east of Center Valley, to Bachman Street in Hellertown is completed, approximately five miles. Ye Olde Photographer is happy to report the temporary northern terminus is only about two blocks from a Rita's Water Ice purveyor!

The trail is mostly rolled limestone cinders and notably wider than some other trails in southeastern Pennsylvania. The route is on the former right-of-way of the Reading Railroad Bethlehem Branch which ran from Philadelphia to Bethlehem. Ye Olde Photographer remembers in the early 1960s this route carried seven round trip passenger runs a day plus substantial iron ore trains to feed the steel mill at Bethlehem - times change!
