A city of 20,000 buried in ashes and cinders from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE, to the permanent distress of itself and its inhabitants. One cannot help being awed by a city that was built over 20 centuries ago using concrete and brick as well as stone. A city that had water piped-in through lead ("piombium") pipes made with lead brought in from what is now Britain.
