Northumberland is a small town at the confluence of the West and North Branches of the Susquehanna River. At one time the Pennsylvania Railroad had the fifth largest railyard in the country here. Longer ago, in the late 18th century, this was a small village laid out in an English style with a village green.
There are two sections of Shikellamy State Park; one, on a high point overlooking the junction of the two branches of the Susquehanna, the other, a marina on the southern end of an island in the north branch. The park honors the famous Iroqois chief who played a prominent role in the development of the Pennsylvania frontier in the early 17th century.
The Front Street Station is a nice adaptive reuse of the former Pennsylvania Railroad Station.
