Shelburne Farms is a National Historic Site, a large (1400 acre) estate on the shore of Lake Champlain, just south of Burlington Vermont. It was rather late in the day to do an entire tour, but we took a a sort of hay wagon trek that featured visits to several of the major buildings and gave us some idea of what the place was about. The large house there is now a functioning inn and looks like a nice spot to return to sometime. Once a property connected to wealthy 19th century families, it is now a non-profit agricultural center encouraging sustainable methods and ethical environmental uses of rural lamd. There is a large herd of Brown Swiss cattle; one can get to see cheese making operations if one gets there at the right time. One can even buy some tasty cheddar cheese!
It was an enjoyable experience and offered some education and magnificent views of farm and forest, as well as Lake Champlain.
