Longwood Gardens is a legacy of the DuPont family found along US Route 1 in Kennett Square. In addition to expansive greenhouse/conservatory space, there are over a thousand acres of outdoor plantings creating a beautiful setting. There is a huge lighted fountain which is a well known feast for the eyes, and is usually accompanied by music. As of 2015 the fountain is shut down for total restoration, expected to be completed in early summer 2017.
The visit shown here was occasioned by a musical event, part of a series held in the ballroom, a huge space that is part of the conservatory. It was not used for this performance, but the space also contains a large pipe organ. The admission included entry to the gardens and conservatory so we arrived an hour or so early to take in a special display of orchids, and in general enjoy a preview of spring. As this was not primarily a photographic mission, we made do with the iPhone 5C which gave a decent account of itself.
We attended a concert by Pablo Ziegler and his Quartet for New Tango. Mr. Ziegler was a pianist for composer Astor Piazzolla for many years, and is also an accomplished composer himself. The quartet instrumentation consists of piano, bandoneon, cello and bass and proved to be a really virtuosic ensemble. While not from this concert, there is a performance by the quartet on YouTube of Piazzolla's Libertango that gives some idea of the experience; a fine evening. (As is common, pictures were not permitted during the concert.)
