This shows how low Ye Olde Photographer has sunk in his old age! Actually, at its best it is pretty impressive. It can work really respectably taking shots of stationary objects in decent lighting. The rear camera is 8 Mpixels (3264 x 2448); the front camera - you know - for selfies - is about 1.2 Mpixels (1280 x 960) which is good - Ye Olde Photographer has no need to see himself at high resolution!
It actually is handy for casual snapshots. One observation: If one really exercises the camera, the battery will not last a whole day. And unlike all his stand-alone digital cameras, YOP notes the phone battery cannot be swapped out. One has to recharge the phone, that is definitely a negative when traveling. If he's really going to be documenting a trek, he would lean to the Canon G15.
And all that said, the device can be useful to get GPS locations, weather reports, email, etc. And good grief, should all else fail, it can even be used as a phone! There are some interesting light meter apps for those of us who still shoot film, also.
June 2015: Sinking even lower, YOP acquired a selfie stick, the ultimate accessory for the narcissist!
October 2016: YOP and Faire Spouse got a too good to pass up deal on iPhone 6s models, so the 5c, while it still
works, is relegated to backup/spare/obsolescence.
