To some folks' amazement, the power these trains take via pantagraphs is 11,000 volts, 25 Hertz; the
warning signs are not kidding. The low frequency apparently allows DC-type traction motors to run but
transformers (with lots of iron core) can be used to step up the voltage for long distance transmission.
