This site is used for occasional art shows and frequently has "installations" on exhibit. One of the more interesting ones
found during this visit was "Pandemonium" by Janet Cardiff and George Miller. Dozens of cells in one cellblock were rigged
with electromechanical gizmos that were arranged to hit various found objects -- metal lampshades, wood cabinets, metal plates
and 55 gallon drums -- with suitable sticks or mallets. These were triggered via electrical impulses controlled by
a central system. There were periods of total silence, but periods when there would be occasional, seemingly random, plinks,
tunks and thumps popping out from various hidden locations. At some points in time they become quite rhythmic, layered and
intense. It was not hard to imagine some sort of inmate protest taking shape as one walked down this long cellblock corridor.
