One application of tiles was as a decorative surround for fireplaces. The tile works office contains a sizable example of a tile-
decorated fireplace. The decorative elements were often scenes based on stories, secular or biblical. Locally, a house with Mercer tiles
used in its construction carries a higher resale value. Mercer tiles were used in the Pennsylvania State Capitol building in Harrisburg.
