Pennhurst was a state school and hospital for people with various disabilities. It
was shut down in 1987 after a decade of controversy following the exposure of
incidents and conditions of the worst sort. In its prime, it was a self contained
entity on 1400 acres with its own railroad station, power generation, farm and dairy.
