Harrisburg is the capital of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and is located on the east bank of the Susquehanna River. The area is a bit of a hub, crossed by a number of Interstate highways, the Pennsylvania Turnpike and several major rail lines.
This gallery began after a short afternoon visit to the state museum to see a juried exhibition, Art of the State 2009. The choice of day was poor for photographing the many buildings that form the Capitol Complex -- hazy and punctuated by showers. Some day we will return, as the actual capitol building is considered one of the most impressive state capitols in the country. It was designed by Philadelphia architect Joseph Huston in an "American Renaissance" style. The building was dedicated in 1906. The exhibited work for Art of the State 2009 may be seen in a Flickr gallery.
The state museum has some typical displays -- dioramas of original native culture and many artifacts and models outlining the state's rich history. Included are a Piper Cub, a Lycoming aircraft engine, a Troy Engine Company horizontal steam engine, plus other examples of the industries that flourished in the state (in the past, if not today!)
