On Saturday afternoon, Laura Donefer demonstrated the creation of two pieces, this is the second. The piece was a large vessel with additional glass built up and textured with a metal tool. Unfortunately, the final result does not appear here, as large glass pieces go into an annealing kiln where the temperature is slowly brought down over a period of many hours to relief internal stresses and get the piece to room temperature without cracking.
Ms Donefer did mention in a conversation afterward that she normally doesn't work pieces this large, but took advantage of having an experienced assistant. Not just anybody can handle fifty or sixty pounds of soft glass on the end of a six foot blowpipe and manage to control it.
