A Sunday afternoon visit to a remarkable place in Hamilton New Jersey. Grounds for Sculpture is an adaptation of the former New Jersey State Fairgrounds, and a few buildings from that period are now exhibition halls. There are over forty acres and over 250 sculptures on the site. There are all sorts of gardens, wildflower areas and water features, as well as spots for refreshments or even a meal. The founding of the current facility was initiated by J. Seward Johnson, a sculptor and a philanthropist (from the Johnson & Johnson family) who wanted to provide exhibition space for contemporary sculptors.
Ye Olde Photographer did not take notes, relying on a keyed map and a bit of luck. As such, some of the pieces pictured he is unable to identify, but the intent here is to provide a sense of what the place is like and encourage the viewer to visit. Many of these pieces are too large to fully appreciate on a monitor screen and this gallery shows considerably less than half of what is there. And the setting itself is a great place to spend time on a nice day.
