The Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge is along the coast of Delaware, a few miles east of Smyrna. Depending on the time of year, all sorts of critters - land, air and water -- may be found here. We visited on a day that was fairly warm for April, and mostly sunny. There is a gravel drive that serpentines through parts of the preserve, and a few short trails which bring the viewer though woods and along some shorelines. Two of the trails are wheelchair accessible, so there is nothing strenuous about them, but the day was a pleasant excursion in the outdoors. And it surely felt good to get out and about a little after a winter of way more than usual snow!
At the right time of year (October), this refuge is visited by tens of thousands of snow geese as they migrate for the seasons. Horseshoe crabs move onto the shore and lay eggs in May. This early visit was a chance to see some of the lay of the land which will likely be obscured by foliage when the trees leaf out.
