Begun with the 2013 Turkey Day Expedition centered on Shepherdstown, West Virginia, we visited the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Trail at an access point just across the Potomac River from Shepherdstown. Temperatures were in the mid-30s (ºF) and for moderately sedentary retirees, not conducive to a major walk. This particular location has some spectacular views. The full length of the trail, from Cumberland, Maryland to Georgetown, just outside Washington, DC, is just over 184 miles. The trail is accessible for hiking and bicycling.
