Ye Olde Photographer and his Faire Spouse went to this protest rally in Philadelphia which was one of as many as 600 such events across the country and beyond. A number of different organizations with related goals were involved in putting the event together. It is difficult to guess how many were there from our ground level perspective, but YOP is sure it was several thousand. The goals were to ramp up awareness and hopefully improve conditions, eliminate tearing children away from their parents, a psychological trauma that can bear lifetime scars, and ensure due process for all. Some groups are also targeting closure of a somewhat notorious detention center in Berks County and even abolishing I.C.E. or at least getting it out of Philadelphia. The audience, very diverse in ethnicity and age, stood for two+ hours on a very hot, humid day to hear speeches, poems and songs. Some of the presentations were from a Christian minister, two rabbis, and an imam, as well as various activists and individuals.
Wandering these events, YOP is always amazed at how clever some of the sign makers are. Though he did not equip himself with a zoom lens, and circulating in the large crowd was difficult, YOP tried to get at least a sample of some of the signs, many way less than subtle!
All photos taken with a mere iPhone 6s, occasionally using an iOttie MiGo BlueTooth selfie stick to get above the crowd.
