Begun with the 2013 Turkey Day Expedition centered on Shepherdstown, West Virginia, we visited Antietam National Battlefield, a large national historic site that was the scene of one of the bloodiest battles of the American Civil War. Between the two sides, in one day, September 17, 1862, there were over over 23,000 soldiers killed, wounded or missing.
Thanksgiving Day is one of the few days this site is closed, so we mostly walked around the visitor center grounds, and were able to do part of a self-guided automobile tour.
This site appears to cover several square miles and is loaded with informational signs. A serious Civil War buff could probably spend days here.
