Adam Field

A two-day event, 05 & 06 November 2013, at Montgomery County Community College, Blue Bell, Pennsylvania

Adam Field is a ceramic artist from Colorado who is currently in a residency at the Archie Bray Foundation in Montana.

While all is functional, his work falls into two very different areas - very delicate and intricate carved porcelain pieces and Korean Onggi pots, typically large vessels coil-built to relatively high precision and clean traditional forms. He spent most of 2008 in Korea serving an apprenticeship with a family of Onggi potters who are the fifth and sixth generation of family potters.

For the Onggi pots, Adam works with a well-grogged sculpture clay that nearly approximates the material he used in Korea. The process begins with forming large coils, approximately two inches in diameter and three feet (or more) long. The work is done an a relatively low kick wheel chosen for light weight to permit quick reversals of direction when working, but also capable of coasting smoothly at very slow speeds. The pot he built during the demo contained about 65 pounds of clay.

Adam's website contains pictures and videos, including some documentation of his Korean apprenticeship. He also maintains a YouTube channel with clay work videos of work by himself and other potters.
