ST Thomas Church

The Syrian Catholic Church of Antioch is one of the first communities in Christianity. It had shared from the beginning with Jerusalem the Liturgy of St. James and the Aramaic or Syriac, language spoken by our Lord, the Virgin Mary and the Apostles.

The Syrian Catholic Church, a uniate breakaway from the monophysite Syrian Orthodox church, has been in communion with Rome since 1663. The Syrian Catholics have their own patriarch (resident in Beirut), and since 1890, a patriarchal vicar in Jerusalem has served as spiritual leader of the small local community there and in Bethlehem, which totals about 350. In July 1985, the community consecrated the new patriarchal church in Jerusalem dedicated to St. Thomas, apostle to the peoples of Syria and India.

We still recite the Pater Noster as Jesus pronounced it. St. Thomas was the Apostle who evangelized Mesopotamia (today, Iraq and North of Syria and South of Turkey) and India.

Owned by the Syrian Catholic Church of the Holy Land, St. Thomas Home is a hospice for pilgrims, located in the city center, near Damascus Gate, opposite to the Ecole Biblique of Dominicans, 15 minutes walk from the Holy Sepulcher
