Riders get ready to head down with ruins in the background.

Behind the riders is the ruins of a restaurant and gift shop built in 1942, and never rebuilt after it burned down in 1979. The race staff allowed (in fact encouraged) us to put extra warm clothes in bags, which they drove to the top so we could dress against the wind chill on the speedy descent.
