Ron planted a suggestion that we do the "formerly traditional" New Year's Day ride on the Apache Trail to Tortilla Flat and so we did. Little did we realize how bad the road has become, with near speed bump-sized heaves every few feet and a surface consisting of loose chips from a years-old bungled repaving job with a few irregular strips of semi-smooth asphalt where car tires have worn all the chips away. In a few places where construction has begun, the asphalt has been removed leaving a section of graded dirt. We looked forward to each of the unpaved segments, seeking relief from the bumps! That said, it was a beautiful day for a ride, our bikes performed flawlessly, and the company was great. |
