Long Way Round: An All-Day Breakfast Ride

Sometimes a roadblock can be an opportunity. We planned to try a little restaurant in Miami, AZ, about 70 miles from home, for a mid-morning breakfast. And we did just that. However, the way back was blocked due to a vehicle accident and fire. Rather than wait in a line of stiuck traffic on the road, we turned around and returned to Superior, where we took an extended iced tea break at a tavern in the picturesque old downtown. By the time we returned to the main highway, backed-up traffic and carloads of stranded travelers jammed the road, gas stations, stores and other parking places. We elected to return home via the long way 'round, through Globe, Roosevelt, Tonto Basin and Jake's Corner and back on the Beeline Highway. That added over 100 miles to our ride, but what a great ride it turned out to be, with very little traffic on the entire return trip. We later learned that the direct route back from Miami was blocked until well into the evening.
