Although Maui is noted for its resorts and beaches, we also love the upcountry, on the slopes of Haleakala Volcano. Here there are ranches, farms and art galleries and spectacular views of the island. Ed started the day with another outrigger canoe outing. After breakfast at the resort we drove through Kahului to the Haleakala Highway, which we followed to the summit of Halekala at 10,023 feet elevation. Along the way and at the summit there are fantastic views of Haleakala Crater. On our drive back down the volcano we stopped at the lovely and very fragrant Ali'i Kula Lavender Farm. We stopped at the Kula Lodge for a late lunch/early dinner and visited the Curtis Wilson Cost Gallery at Kula Lodge where we purchased an "Upcountry Maui" print 23 years ago. We capped off a delicious day with an ice cream dessert at a Lappert's of Hawaii ice cream parlor at a mall near our resort. |
