Once again avoiding the Interstate whenever we can, we elect to ride to the Columbia River via the historic one-time gold rush boom town of Sumpter. About 25 miles from Baker City on Highway 7 is the terminal for the Sumpter Valley Railway. Tickets are available to ride the steam-powered train on its approximately 5 miles of narrow-guage railroad.
