M13, The Hercules Cluster

This is the great Hercules Cluster, M13. This image was produced from only 11 sixty second frames acquired with the ASI071MC-Pro camera at the prime focus of the 8-inch f/2 RASA telescope. The frames were processed in PixInsight with a previously acquired master dark frame and flat frames taken on the next night.

At the 10 o'clock position relative to M13 you can clearly see the magnitude 12 galaxy designated NGC 2607. If you view the full size image, you can also see the magnitude 15 galaxy designated IC 4617 between M13 and NGC 2607. The distance of IC 4617 from Earth is not precisely known. Estimates range from 30 to 65 million light years. The ability to capture this faint, distant galaxy with only 11 minutes of exposure time and an 8 inch aperture is a testament to the amazing light gathering ability of the RASA.
