Old Rag Mountain stands by itself on the eastern edge of Shenandoah, at 3291 ft. It is unique among
Blue Ridge Mountains in having a large amount of exposed rock on and surrounding the summit, and
hiking to the top involves some minor scrambling. I try to go up at least three time a year to see
the changes resulting from different seasons, weather, and lighting conditions. December 31 of 2007
was clear and relatively warm, without the high wind that often buffets the high ridges. As you see
it made very good picture-taking conditions, especially for panoramas. Note how the character of the
light changes as the day progresses into evening.
