Yup....as you may have noticed, there is something not quite right with her ears. It is a congenital birth defect called Microtia. Along with the misformed outer ears, typically people with this condition also have middle ear defects as well.
Indeed, Madelyn does suffer some significant hearing loss, and will be fitted with a specialized hearing aid very soon. A bone conduction hearing aid transmits sound directly to the inner ear through the bone at the back of your ear. This hearing aid should allow her to hear normally. Most importantly, because the hearing loss has been detected very early, her ability to develop normal speech and language should be just like a normal kid.
Thankfully, we are seeing a renouned childrens ear surgeon at the Hospital for Sick Children next week.
