Phuket Vegetarian Festival - Samkong Shrine Procession

The Phuket Vegetarian Festival is an annual event held during the ninth lunar month of the Chinese calendar. It is believed that the vegetarian festival and its accompanying sacred rituals bestow good fortune upon those who religiously observe this rite. During this time, local residents of Chinese ancestry strictly observe a 10-day vegetarian or vegan diet for the purposes of spiritual cleansing and merit-making. Sacred rituals are performed at various Chinese shrines and temples and aesthetic displays such as walking barefooted over hot coals and ascending ladders with bladed rungs are performed by entranced devotees known as "Ma Song". http://www.phuketvegetarian.com Samkong Street procession 21st October 2009

Thanks for the positive feedback. I really could have done with staying for more than one day to get more of a broader picture of the event and would have loved to have been there for the climax. Beggs, I basically arrived very early at the shrine (5am) to witness the build up and then followed the procession into the town. I used two cameras my digital and 35mm film, the negatives from which I need to develop. 24-70 was the main lens but also had an 85mm for portraits.

Wonderful photos David. I've had the chance to photograph the Singapore Thaipuisam festival twice but cannot get the atmosphere and emotion of your shots. Can you share some info on equipment and some insight into how you went about getting these wonderful shots?
