Maryland Mountains Rendezvous

Maryland Mountains Rendezvous, June 12-14, Hancock, MD

The Maryland Airheads will head west this year to the BG Thomas B. Baker Training Facility near Hancock, MD, for a weekend rendezvous in the mountains overlooking the historic C&O Canal and scenic Potomac River. This former Boy Scout wilderness camp now belongs to the Maryland National Guard, which is graciously allowing us the run of the 400 acre facility for the weekend. We have reserved the lodge on top of the hill which offers showers, flush toilets, and an unfurnished great room suitable for “dormitory style” sleeping (BYO sleeping pad or cot). If you’d prefer to camp, there’s plenty of space on the grass in front of the lodge to pitch your tent; we’ll still let you use the indoor plumbing! We’ll have pizza on Friday night, ride out to breakfast Saturday at a local diner, grill brats & burgers on Saturday night, and send you off Sunday with bagels & donuts for breakfast. The local roads promise spirited riding and scenic views, and the mountains of both WV and PA just a few minutes’ ride away. Nearby Little Orleans offers kayaking, river rafting, and fishing. The C&O Canal towpath hiking/biking trail is just a short hike downhill from the lodge. We’re asking $20 per person for the weekend to defray the cost of the food; any surplus funds will be donated to the Maryland National Guard Family Support Program. The facility is gated, so we’ll need to know you’re coming. RSVP to Dave Mohan at beemernut@safe-mail.net or 717-993-0104. Lil-Aaron Straus Wilderness Area is located at 11110 Ziegler Road, Hancock, MD 21750-9999. Google it, see the diagram below for directions, or follow the Airheads signs from exit 77 of I-68/US 40, just west of Hancock.
***WARNING: Be advised that the road to the Lodge from Zeigler Rd is a half-mile of well-graded packed crushed stone. While it should not present any difficulty to anyone who has ridden on unpaved roads before, we wanted everyone to know that the road is not paved and actual road conditions will depend on the amount of traffic and weather at the time of the event.***
