Alastair flower orig + curves

This is the original image with curves adjustment you can see below to produce the histogram you can see below. This was a quick and dirty effort with possibly more curves adjustment than you'd use if you wanted to retain a more natural appearance with colours closer to the original colours, but it demonstrates the idea of what can be done to make use of the whole spectrum for a brighter, more vivd and more contrasty image with greater impact. You can see the 'S' shaped curve that allows for greater contrast through the mid brightness areas at the expense of less contrast at the dark and bright ends of the spectrum.

The original histogram is on the left and the curves with the resulting histogram are on the right. You can see that the image now uses the whole spectrum whthout clipping too much at the bright end (really only the smaller bright areas in the water drops), while clipping two of the three colour channels at the dark end where detail is often less important.

Levels plus contrast can be used to make some adjustments instead of using curves, but without the much greater control available from curves. To use levels instead of curves on the original image, grab the right input handle and move it back to the end of the 'hump' in the graph, then play with the centre handle until the result is as close as you can get to what you want. You can then separately aply a contrast adjustment to your taste if you want, but it may clip your bright and shadow detail more than you want.
