Scarlett
by Dale R. Palmer

This is a "Scarlett King Snake" and it was on my porch night before last. I opened the door just long enough to get a shot using flash so I could get a better look at the snake and identify it. Fortunately it is a "good snake" that will keep varmints out of my yard and even eat other snakes including poisonous snakes. Once I closed the door and turned off the porch light it was gone.

Oh, he's a real beauty, Dale! You did a fine job capturing him quickly using flash. I always remember the little saying to help determine if poisonous or not: "Red next to yellow, kill a fellow; red next to black, venom lack." :)

YIKES!!!! If I had seen this on my porch you probably would have heard the scream at your house!

It is a beautiful snake (in a picture). The name Scarlett always makes me think of "Gone with the Wind".

As for a "King" Snake named Scarlet, you've heard of a boy name Sue. So why not Obviously, the scarlet name comes from the beautiful red banding. That snake is a beauty. Wonderful that it has the bright colors without being venomous.

This is a pretty cool capture with just a P&S. Little cameras can be mighty at times.
