A POW Christmas
by Breezanemom

USS Alabama

Found this display at the USS Alabama's museum. It made me more grateful for all the things I have every Christmas.

According to the story, in 1972, American POW's were given socks by the North Vietnamese prison guards for the first time on Christmas Eve. They took the socks and made a crude Christmas tree, which they pasted onto the wall by using the rice ration given to them and making a sticky paste with it.

On Christmas morning, the guards made nothing of the socks stuck to the wall, so the POW's decided to "decorate" their tree. They made paper ornaments from toilet paper and colored them with stains made from ink, water treatment tabs (blue tint) and crushed tiles (pink-ish tint). The POW's spent most of Christmas day erecting their tree.

a very touching story about the spirit and nature of those warriors sent out to do their nation's bidding
