Chobham scene

Chobham, Surrey County, England

This is a pastoral scene from England which I shot some time ago. In the interest of showing other members how to do a good critique (as well as showing me), please consider leaving some comments.

Sorry about the duplication -didn't know how this works : )

I agree about the crop but I would make the left crop right down the middle of the 1st large leaf.

Using the lacy, leafy branch to frame the building stops the eye from being propelled out of the picture. It also adds great texture complimenting the hard lines of the building and the emptiness of the lawn.

I agree about cropping but I would cut the 1st large leaf right down the middle. The use of the lacy, leafy branch as a frame to keep the eye from being propelled out of the picture by the sharp steeple is very good. It also adds excellent texture to the hard lines of the building and the emptiness of the lawn.

My comments.

Overall the scene and subject is well exposed and in good focus. The composition is somewhat lacking in that the main subject which appears to be the building, is practically dead center in the frame. I don't always believe the 'rules of composition' must be adhered to but if the 'rules' are broken it must be for a specific purpose, primarily to enhance the subject. This particular subject I don't believe is enhanced by placing it dead center.

I also feel the framing is a bit of a distraction mostly because it is in mostly in focus but adds nothing to the subject. The framing only at the top with the subject at the center makes the image a bit unbalanced because there is not enough 'weight' at the bottom.

While the same framing could have been used but employed with a hyperfocal point where the 'frame' could be slightly out of focus or maybe better yet the elimination of the framing all together.

One bit of a 'nit pick' is I am left wondering what the small clumps are that are scattered about the grassy area.

I can clearly see that the House is the subject, so the rule of thirds has been broken to suit the subject. I think the hedge which runs across the frame is the reason for a less interesting photo of the subject. Its interfering with the scene. A possible small crop on the left to remove what appears to be a gate and then apply a little more contrast along with a more central increase in colour on the house would improve this photo a little. I know what the subject is but for me there its a little flat to enhance the subject other than the frame.

Initial impressions.
1) Rule of thirds violated - what is the subject - the lawn or the building?
2) Use of the tree leaves as a frame was a good idea, but the large leaves at the top left corner are distracting. Moving a bit could change this.
3) A crop of the image would improve things. Consider right margin just to the left of the street light; eliminating 2/3 of the lawn; and left margin adjusted such that only one or two of the large leaves is in the image. Top margin is fine.
