My Dad, Peter J. Gasperoni was a Machinist Third Class on the USS Herndon during WWII, Sadly I never got to know my Dad, he came home, his body came home as handsome as ever but his mind was gone. He was hit with a piece of Shrapnel at the base of the brain and spent the resit of his life in the Bedford VA Hospital. I recently heard that it was call the Lucky Herndon because they didn't expect to survive but they all came home. Being on this website has helped me get to know him .. Thank you.

My dad, John Tolich, served aboard the Herndon. He is 92,diagnosed with Alzheimers. But today, on the 72nd anniversary of D Day, he remembers. He remembers the sights and smells, fallen brothers, and victory.

My Uncle, Joseph Buchanan of Springfield Ma served on USS Herndon during WWII. He was also known as Joe Buck. He always spoke of his exploits. I have news articles of Herndon as published in Springfield Mass naming her "the lucky Herndon". If anyone has any info, I'd love to hear from you

My father was James W Baird he was a quartermaster on the Herndon. He had some very interesting stories about what went on, on the ship. One of the more interesting ones to me was when they accidentally sunk a U.S. minesweeper in Boston harbor. Quartermaster Harold Sweet was at the wheel as they were pulling into Boston, in a heavy fog. The two ships communicated that they were to pass portside to portside for some reason the minesweeper cut in front of the Herndon and got cut in half and sunk. There were no casualties except the minesweepers police dog mascot.

In my line of work (jewelry) I have come across a silver 3" pin with the silhouette of a naval ship with the number 638 on the bow. In my research it appears to be the Uss Herndon. My father also served in the Navy during WWII on another vessel and I can appreciate the history and interest of those on this website. My father served on the USS Herndon. He was a gunner's mate. His name is Pete Belins. I have a typescript of his journal from D-Day. I can't find the journal itself, but I saw it many times growing up. I loved to look at his pictures and hear his stories.

I just learned that John Supper had served on the Herndon beginning on 09-26-1942 and ending on 01-04-1946, john was born in New York and went onto to become a radio operator in peiping,china and tokyo,japan after the war, before moving back to his hometown in croydon, pa.

of the pigion ship to be sunk on the shores of normandy if you still over over see this

My Father Joeseph A Redding served on the USS Herndon During WWII in the Atlantic. I loved listing to my father tell me the stories of D-Day and other battles the ship went through. I became a WWII history buff and it brought us closer.

I curious, did anyone else know him? I'd like to hear from you if you did.

My grandfather served on the Herndon during WW2 as well. His name was Paul James (PJ) Lambert. He died in 1973 so I never knew him, though I've always wondered about his experiences and life. Glad to see he was part of such an amazing ship and crew!

The US News and World dated 9/24/07 about the Lucky Herndon was my father Capt(ret) Bernard W. Moulton. He joined the Herndon as his first duty after graduating from the US Naval Academy, Class of 43. Capt Moulton died this past Sunday at 88 years of age. He still loved telling stories about all the brave men who served on the "Lucky Herndon" . A week before he died, he was regaling us with how the Herndon came into the beaches at Normandy to "soften" up the beaches for the boys going ashore. He was in tears , saying the carnage was awful!!! That was the first time any of us had ever seen him cry regarding what he saw during his 30 years on active duty. He died a week and 1 day later- still a proud Navy man.

My dad Lt. William Donnan Stephenson served from comissioning until she came back from China. He passed away Jan 10, 2000. He always spoke of his ship and the men he served with with great love and fond memories.

Richard, In U.S. News & World Report dated 9-24-2007po in the story "making history" there is a Bernard Herndon that lives in Annapolis, MD that was on board in 1943. Maybe you can connect with him,he's now 83-let me know if you recieve this msg and if you contact him and the outcome. I served in the Navy in Key West 55-59- still here-good luck Terry
