For several months I had a ring neck pheasant hanging around my property. On day I was lucky enough to get to watch him take a sand bath. My whole back yard is sand, so he had a pretty big tub!
He starts by hollowing out a little depression to sit in.
Then they fluff up their feathers and stir up the loose dirt with their wings and feet.
Hey! I'm trying to take a bath here.
These dust baths are important for feather maintenance.
He even rolled on his side.
The dust soaks up excess moisture and oils.
It also probably helps with removing tiny parasites that live on feathers.
He even rolled around on his back, just like a dog does.
Oooh, that feels soooo good!
Back and forth from side to side he went. The whole process took 13 minutes.
Then when they are done, they shake it off.
Shaking off the excess dust and dirt. Now I am clean!
I am a fine looking fowl.
Ready to take a bow.
Thank you very much!
I only saw him one time after this, and I haven't seen him since.
