Redtail Release ~ Oshkosh, WI

This male redtail was brought to the Feather Rehab Center on Sept 1, 2004 from the Oshkosh area. He was taken to Animal Medical Center in Appleton, WI for x-rays and an exam. It was diagnosed that his left radius was broken in two places. He was dehydrated and underweight. He was taken back to The Feather where he was kept in a quiet place for about two weeks to heal. While there he ate on his own, but kept losing feathers while in the hospital cage.

In the middle of September he was put outside in a 12 x 16 cage. On October 22 he was then transfered to a 40 foot cage where he built his muscle and weight up by flying and killing his own food.

On Saturday, November 6, 2004 he was taken back to the area he came from. When the carrier door was opened he just sat there a few minutes. Fisher actually had to knock on the pen to get him to come out. He kind of hopped out, spread his wings out and sat long enough for me to fire off two shots when he turned and headed towards the woods. We watched him for awhile and were just about to leave when he flew to the east and landed in a different tree. It was then we noticed another large redtail fly in and land in the same tree as he was in but up higher (picture 065043). We were worried we were going to see a confrontation occur, when it was apparent that because of the size it was probably a female redtail. They sat in the same tree for quite awhile, and then the female flew off. We watched him for awhile longer until we saw him fly into the woods and the female flew off after him.
