This sandhill crane has been hanging out by the marsh off of the 45 bypass near New London, WI. Several people have reported the sighting to my friend Fisher who is a wildlife rehabber. It is unheard of for a sandhill to be around here this time of year. On all of the pictures we have gotten of it, the right wing doesn't look like it lays quite right. Note also that this bird is banded. There is a possibility it was one released by Fisher this past year. We have been trying to get shots of the band so we can see the numbers on it. Fortunately for this bird the weather has been very mild by northeast Wisconsin standards. Plans are being made to try and possibly capture this bird soon before approaching cold weather sets in. We have also noted on extreme crops of the legs, a possible hole or wound on one leg and a swollen hock on the other.
