Jackson Pollock (1912-1956), was a leader in the American Abstract Expressionist movement of the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. Although critically acclaimed and respected by other contemporary artists, Pollock struggled with depression and alcoholism most of his life. He had a rare sober period (in the early 50s)lasting a couple of years. During this time, he painted some of his most impressive "drip paintings". It was at this point in his life that he began to experiment with black & white paintings, which were met with a mixed reception of welcome and scorn. The painting here (No. 20) is an example of this experiemental style. Feeling misunderstood and unappreciated as a result of his new direction, some scholars believe this triggered his last bout with alcoholism and depression. Driving under the influence, he died in a car accident shortly after in 1956.
