Bird are the best
Stephanie 11-Dec-2011 20:40
WOW! Your phtoto's are wonderful!! And you have no idea how much some of them are helping me out, I'm planning an oil pastel drawing Lesson for fourth graders of Birds of Paradise and I'm using some of your Bird photos (I am telling the kids your name and everything too) These bird photos are just going to be so perfect for this lesson, I'm really excited. I have to teach them about foreground and background elements as well and they are such great examples of that too. I know the student will think these birds are awesome when they see your photos. Thank you!

Tena koe Doug (greetings in Maori).
Following your learned advice you provided in the 'Digital Camera' forum to a 'noise' problem I have, I came to your site to admire. Wow! It will take me days to get thru all of your albums but I will, I can learn so much from what you have on show.
My admiration sir. Should you get a moment, I would really appreciate your opinion of some of my albums (tedchappell)

Hi Doug,
I chanced upon your wonderful galleries when I was looking for a photograph of a Palm Cockatoo to put in a book of animal and bird photos that I am making up for the four-year-old son of a good friend. Your shots are wonderful. Not only do they show these birds in minute detail but they capture their wonderful presence. It is clear to me that you were enchanted by these creatures when you photographed them, and you have created wonderful, enchanting, photographs. Then I looked at the rest of the birds - similarly enchanting. Then the Chimpanzees and other creatures. I hope you are pleased to know that I will make up book after book that will bring pleasure and fascination to this intelligent boy who already sees the world as a series of miracles. Thank youso much. Warwick Wakefield

Just having some lunch here in Hong Kong and thought i'd browse some popular galleries and came across your Burma gallery which i think is great....you appear to shoot and capture things in a very clean, honest, no nonsense way....without any ego getting in the way, and i really like that. Having been in Asia myself 13 years i can attest that your photos are excellent and certainly not given on a plate. If this is only a hobby you should seriously consider doing it full time. Congrats Doug.

Hi Doug,

I came across your website while browsing through the internet for information on Nanxun. Your photos are amazing!!!!!! Were they taken with a digital camera?
Could you give me some advice on Nanxun since you've been there.

A) Is it convenient to get to Nanxun on your own with the public transport from Shanghai?
B) Is this a small village with teahouses, shops, family run hotels?
C) How many days would you recommend in Nanxun?
D) Are there lots to do there (I love photography, cultural and nature sightseeing)?

E) I know there are several famous water-towns like "zhouzhuang", "TongLi", "Xitang"……..not sure if you've visited these places before, but would like to know which of these you strongly recommend a visit (getting away from the crowds).

Hope to hear from you.

Cheers
Herman

Doug, you allowed the Avian Health Group to use your photo in this years calendar. The USDA has asked us to find out if you would consider contributing to a national day planner that they are putting together. Rather than give them your name I told them I would ask you first..Thanks, Layton Smith Avian Health Group..layton.smith@aphis.usda.gov

Thanks for the comments FastUno. The shots include a wide range of light conditions, camera settings, DOF, lenses, etc. I frequently use fill flash (-2 flash comp, high speed sync, Av) to reduce shadows and bring out a little more color. All of the animal and bird shots are either with a monopod or handheld and receive some post processing with moderate sharpening. The lack of sharpness in some is attributed to the lack of skill or errors by me (I’m learning), the camera settings (shallow DOF, long shutter times) and sometimes motion. I’ve sent you an email with more details.
FastUno 13-Dec-2003 20:29
First off, you have some of the nicest animal pictures that I have seen. Funny thing, some of the nicest animal pics come from Singapore, as I have seen from others. Do you guys have some special lighting there or some other tricks?
I would like to discuss sharpness & photo editing with you. Do you use any photo editing? If so, what techniques? If you look at your pictures real closely some are unbelievabl SHARP, while others are not quite there. Colors are just about always magnificent, while sharpness is in question. When you look at the settings there appears no reason for the pics not be be consistently sharp. I have a Canon 10d too and I have big issues with sharpness of photos. Generally the photos come out soft & requires me to edit them. Sharpness seems to be hit or miss on my part. Please take a look at my website (www.fastuno.myip.org) and let me know what you think. You can email me from there. Much thanks for your pics, they are an inspiration.

Hi Doug,

May I know which mode did you use to take the night shots of Singapore with the S45?
I set it to night mode, but it did not seems to work well. What else should I adjust? Please advise.

Thank you,
Sheryl
JoLene 29-Aug-2003 04:08
How do I contact you regarding your photo's? I am working on a project and your bat picture would be perfect (this is a book project). Thanks!
Steve 14-Jun-2003 00:21
Very nice.

Did your S45 firmware work for you? I'm trying my best to make sense of the Canon "instructions" but cannot get the camera to display FIRMWARE UPDATE in Procedure 3.

Their instructions are screwy; they co-mingled updating w/ CF reader and updating via USB. I'm doing USB and it WILL NOT WORK! Will you lend me a hand?

BTW, I just got a 512 Transcend card. Should I install it before or after firmware?

Thanks in advance.
Jack 08-Jun-2003 01:20
As I'm considering purchasing a Canon PowerShot 45, I'm really impressed with the quality of photographs you took using that camera. Granted, I have very little experience in photography and I don't expect to magically be transformed into a pro--but it's really nice to know that this camera offers such possibilities.

Guest 04-Apr-2003 08:35
I know everyone says "wonderful photos" all of the time and it loses it's meaning. I do think it applies here though. I looked at a few (will look at rest later) and they are excellent! Everything is right on they money!
