Rocky ... sorry to hear about your experience. My 70-300 IS is not the DO version you refer to, and I have been pretty happy with its performance throughout the zoom range ... Doug

You have taken some great pictures. I purchased a Canon 70-300 DO IS USM lens for a trip from Cape Town, through Namibia, Botswana and ending in Victoria Falls. I took many pictures with this lens at full zoom (300mm) and this lens is touted by Canon that it is image stablized and has sharp image quality. I spent $1200+ for this lens and every one of my 300 mm zoom images was totally worthless. They are ALL out of focus. I took many shots from 70 to 200mm and those are fine. But I purchased this lens for its ability to zoom to 300 mm and this lens is useless at that zoom range. All my images are so out of focus, I can't use any of them. This is a total waste of money and ruined my trip, and now Canon won't refund my money that I wasted on this worthless piece of crap lens. Would yo pay $1200 for a 70 - 200 mm lens, because that is all you're getting. A total, total waste of money.

Doug, Absolutely breathtaking. Being keen on birding and travel photography, I have now decided to buy the Canon 70-300 IS (rather than the 70-200 IS, L) based on what I have seen from your shots. Thank you for sharing. SK Chew, Malaysia

lovely pictures, and was only loking on this site for reviews on this lens as i am going to kenya this year, and was torn between the 70-300 and the 70-200 F4 L. your pics have helped me decide, that it is the 70-300 i will be getting, as the quality looks great. i find your style very similar to Nick Brandt (only yours are colour ).

Thanks, Raphael. After viewing your Iceland gallery, I'm afraid you've given me a simlar problem: now I want to visit Iceland! Excellent work; I couldn't find a single sub-standard photograph there. I hope you will be adding more galleries in the near future.

Hi, Joan; I have been very happy with the performance of the Canon bodies. The 1Ds was borrowed/rented, and I found it less intuitive to use than the 350D (aka Digital Rebel XT), but it still worked well. Since these photographs were taken, I have sold the 350D and bought a 5D, which, although it has 12.8 megapixels and a full-sized sensor like the 1Ds, is much lighter than the 1Ds and handles more like the 350D. So, for me, the 5D is the best of both worlds. Apart from the relatively high price, the only complaints that resonate with me are 1) that it has no built-in flash and 2) that the continuous-shooting rate is only 3 fps. Oh, and it would be nice to have an easier way to lock up the mirror. But for my use the good points greatly outweigh those drawbacks.

joan 16-Aug-2006 20:18
do your canon bodies perform well? i am thinking to switch from a Nikon d2x (which was stolen) to an eos 5d.

Guest 12-Aug-2006 20:39
What a great gallery, my favs are the cheetahs...V

Einar Johannessen 09-Aug-2006 10:27
Beautiful pictures. Well done!

Darth Pantoof 19-Jul-2006 00:00
Fantastic shots, Doug. You have a wonderful eye. I'm thinking about the canon 70-300 (I own the 350d, like yourself) and was wondering just how much post production went into the shots. Can I expect similar quality regarding colour, contrast and sharpness from the lens shots alone? Thanks mate.

tom martin jr 18-Jul-2006 05:23
hi doug, thanks for sending the pictures.all i can say is wow about the content and the quality, looks like it was a trip of a life time.i`ll have to get the details of your trip

Lawrence Oei 14-Jul-2006 09:23
Strangely enough, I also got the "white" sky phenomenon like in some of your shots (like the zebra background). Not sure if CPL would help or not

Doug Chaffee 07-Jul-2006 06:39
Almost all were shot RAW, so there was no sharpening in the camera, only in post-processing. By the way, don't you think "everything is way oversharpened" might just be a bit of an overstatement? :)

Guest 07-Jul-2006 04:43
Good photos. But it looks like everything is way oversharpened. Are you double your sharpening? in camera and then again in post production?

George Dow 06-Jul-2006 13:52
The best nature photos I have seen in a long time. Beautifully clear and up close. Great artistic ability Doug.

Doug Chaffee 30-Jun-2006 15:05
Thanks for your comment, newbie2005. I wanted to "set and forget", and couldn't count on high light levels. Since IS doesn't help with subject motion, I wanted to keep the shutter speeds up, and as I've observed that 200 gives very acceptable noise levels (or "grain"), I was most comfortable leaving it there.

Guest 30-Jun-2006 13:42
great photos! just one question: i noticed you shot your canon 70-300 IS shots at ISO200, why? it looks to me like you had fast enough shutterspeeds to allow ISO100, is there any particular reason you chose 200? awesome photos, im loving that canon 7-300. cheers.

Janice 28-Jun-2006 02:15
Your photos are what I can only dream to attempt. Nice work. JF

Guest 27-Jun-2006 05:29
What a Super set of images Doug! It's nice to see them at a higher res. It is an amazing variety of species in a small area and a short timespan.

Sharon Miiller 26-Jun-2006 16:01
