Arctic Tern guarding the entrance to the nesting area

Arctic Terns fly from Antarctica to the area near the Mendenhall Glacier to breed and raise their young. It is one of the longest breeding migrations in the world at about 12,000 miles one-way. They spend about three months in our area before migrating back to Antarctica.
