Jeble - Syria - ancient harbour town with Roman theatre
Jeble is ancient. It has been Phoenician, Assyrian, Greek, Roman, Muslim, has been a crusader stronghold and been conquered time and again. In 2010 I went to Jeble to see the Roman theatre that is its main sight, and just see some of the town. Because I did the theatre maybe a bit too thoroughly for some viewers I give it a gallery-within-a-gallery. It is a fine specimen though. Currently being restored I wonder what the result will look like. I had the impression they may be extending it to its original half circle (part of that missing now because the stone was used elsewhere). The other sight in town if the tomb of Ibrahim Ibn Adham (d 778) who renounced life at the princely court of Balkh (Afghanistan) in favour of itinerant asceticism. The mosque stand at the site of an early seventh century church.
