Damascus sept 2009 2901.jpg

To the right is the al-Ajami Mosque (Turba Afriduniye), intended as a tomb (turba) and Koran school (madrasa). It’s from 1348 commemorating the Persian merchant Afridun al-Ajami. I did not get in, if I had I would have seen (says The monuments of Syria by Ross Burns) a rare example of the cruciform mosque. Ahead to the left is the Mausoleum of Amir Saif al-Din Bahadur al-Mansuri, a military leader in whose honour the tomb was built in 1329.
