Bosra East Gate 0752.jpg

Bosra, Syria view map

This is the East Gate, On the site it is indicated ”Also called the Nabatean Door it is characterized by pure Nabatean features and ornaments, similar to those found in Petra. This Arch constitutes the connection point between the East-West street and the new Nabatean quarter built at the eastern side of the city. The Arch signs the beginning of a monumental axis leading to the grand temple that was probably dedicated by Rabbel II to the Nabatean divine (Dusares II). The Arch was built during the second half of the first century AD, equipped by four strong pillars carrying two vaulted passages at the north and south sides, and the were extended by colonnaded passages. The entrance opening is in the middle topped by the upper lintel, only for pedestrians because of the stairs that prevent carriages from passing. The plan of the Arch and specially its niches are of roman style. One the left side of the Arch there are two structures with small columns and pillars topped by Nabatean capitals, as if it was a monumental entrance probably leading to the new temple also located in the eastern quarter. A water supply system built from baked mud with a principle sewer was installed beneath the basalt slab. A wall leaning on the eastern side of the Arch was built in the Umayyad period, when walls began to extend over the walking paths in the passage under the vestiges of the Arch. Starting from the 19th century the Arch space was occupied by a traditional house.
