Bosra Mosque of Fatima 0744.jpg

Bosra, Syria view map

I found on the web:
The year and name of the patron have been extinguished, but the epigraphic style clearly points to the reign of al-Salih Isma‘il (615–44/1218–46). The building of the rectangular structure, measuring 11 m x 21 m, was in two phases. The original, northern part of the structure’s stonework is more irregular than that of the later, southern section, which is made of thoroughly hewn and regularly cut stones. The interior demonstrates the local building technique: six low-placed arches that support the basalt slabs forming a flat roof. The two northern arches rest on antique abutments while the third, central, arch, constructed entirely from spolia, marks the transition to the newer section. The extension to the south is distinguishable by larger windows and a lack of spolia; the arches are smaller and rest directly on the ground without abutments. Although a wider room would have been preferable for the devotional needs of the Islamic community, the mosque’s extension was in its length rather than its width, because the local roofing technique made a lengthwise extension easier to manage.
Here also, the isolated minaret erected at the north-east corner of the mosque is of later date. The inscription under the horizontal ledge that protrudes from the minaret's outer wall between the ground and first level mentions the Mamluk sultan, al-Nasir Muhammad as the patron in 705/1306. It clearly copies the Ayyubid minaret of the Jami‘ al-‘Umari which was constructed 90 years earlier.
